The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria [MWUN] has appealed to stakeholders in the maritime industry to assist in the transformation of the union’s Okokomaiko Estate which is located off the Lagos Badagry expressway in Lagos to a viable functional housing estate.
President General of the union, Comrade Tony Nted Emmanuel made this known recently at the commissioning of the union’s building in Abuja and fund raising for the realization  of the Okokomaiko housing estate.

Nted said that the leadership of the union is desirous of ensuring that the housing estate becomes a reality, even as he stressed that the MWUN cannot translate the dream of the estate into a reality on its own.
The MWUN boss explained that, the union, as a non-governmental organisation and non-profit making venture, there is the need for well meaning Nigerians to assist in the project.
According to him, the vast area earmarked for the estate is currently threatened by trespassers, land speculators; including illegal squatters.
‘’For a union that stands for rendering service to its members ,the nation and humanity ,we have a self defined duty and responsibility to deeply and visibly invest in amenities that can impact positively on people’s lives such as the Okokomaiko housing estate project.’’
‘’This cannot and should not be hindered or limited by our lean resources as a non- profit making organisation and we have therefore decided to appeal to the goodwill of you our friends, our employers, social partners and philanthropists for good donations at the launching programme, he said.
Shipping Position Daily gathered the Okokomaiko Housing Estate was conceived by the defunct Dockworkers Union of Nigeria in the days of the union’s erstwhile leader; Chief Ogunleye and was inherited by the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria after merger in 1996 which has remained a dream up till date.
We also gathered that a whooping sum of N60million had been realized for the maritime union housing estate project.
