An online platform had published a story titled “Govt probes auto policy”, in which it quoted the Public Relation Officer of NCS; Mr Wale Adeniyi, has saying on Tuesday in Lagos that:“there are beneficiaries in the Automotive and Hotel/Hospitality Industry who have enjoyed concessions worth billions of Naira. We are compiling the names of these beneficiaries and will request them to justify the concession they enjoyed”.
Adeniyi had added that: “We are appealing to all genuine importers not to exercise any fear as this is not designed to witch-hunt any one. This exercise is only about enforcing payments that are legitimately due to the Federal Government of Nigeria”.
But, reacting to the story on behalf of NAC, Director Policy and Planning, Luqman Mamudu said Assembling of vehicles is not rocket science.
Mamudu said: “Your headline is very unfair to automotive industry. The National Automotive Council faces myriad of challenges in the implementation of the policy and such shouting headlines potentially undermines government effort to diversify the economy which is policy objective”.
He added: “A bulk of companies mentioned are not even auto. We have 34 companies participating in the policy. The failure of NCS (Nigeria Customs Service) to do their job should not be used as an excuse to give the policy bad name. Please refrain from it. Help the policy to succeed. Assembling of vehicle is not rocket science. Nigerians can do it…and it’s been done. Don’t scare investors”.
