Navy Hands Over Rifle Snatched From Police At Marine Beach, Apapa

The Nigerian Navy in Lagos on Monday handed over a recovered AK 47 rifle to the officers of the Nigeria Police, Ijora Division in Lagos.
Commodore Abraham Adaji, Commander, Nigeria Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, told newsmen that the rifle, marked 22690, was snatched from policemen by hoodlums on March 19.
“The men of the Nigerian Navy Taskforce retrieved the rifle and brought it to the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT’s base in Apapa,’’ he said, while handing over the rifle to policemen from the division’s armoury.
According to Adaji, the rifle, which had police markings all over it, had 30 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.
“In the course of investigation, we got information that some hoodlums attacked a police patrol vehicle on March 19 and attempted to snatch the rifle.
“The policemen pursued the hoodlums and in the process the hoodlums dropped the rifle under one abandoned vehicle in Marine Beach area.
“A vulcanizer found the rifle the following morning at his shop and immediately alerted the Naval Taskforce deployed to the area,’’ he said.
Adaji said that the weapon was formally handed over to the police armoury after presenting evidence that substantiated the navy’s investigation.
“We are delighted that we have Nigerians that are not only patriotic but also security conscious,’’ said the navy boss.
He added that the havoc the rifle would have caused in wrong hands could best be imagined.
