The Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Juan Ignacio Sell, has expressed the Spanish Government’s keenness to deepen cooperation with Nigeria, particularly through enhanced collaboration with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
This commitment according to a press release by the Assistant Director of Public Relations at NIMASA, Osagie Edward, was reiterated during Ambassador Juan’s inspection of two new bulletproof security boats, constructed for NIMASA by the Spanish company Areas.
Ambassador Juan emphasized, “This marks another significant step in the maritime security cooperation between Spain and Nigeria. The Spanish government views Nigeria as a key partner in achieving security in the Gulf of Guinea. Additionally, we maintain a naval presence in the region to bolster security efforts. Our President has directed the embassy to seek further partnerships with Nigeria in the maritime sector. The establishment of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry by President Bola Tinubu GCFR underscores Nigeria’s commitment to harnessing oceanic resources, and Spain stands ready to support Nigeria in this endeavor. That’s why I have come from Abuja to meet with the DG.”
In response, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA, affirmed the agency’s dedication to expediting the deployment of the patrol boats. He welcomed the partnership with Spain, stressing that maritime security requires collaborative efforts.
“Maritime security cannot be tackled by any single country alone. Collaboration is essential for ensuring safety and security at sea,” he stated. “We appreciate the support from the Spanish Government and are eager to explore avenues for cooperation, including human and infrastructural development. We will expedite the logistics to deploy these vessels promptly. I am confident they will not only enhance security in Nigerian waters but also boost government revenue through increased port calls and the development of the fishing industry along the Nigerian coastline.”
The security boats, equipped with eight passenger seats, measure 13.2 meters in length and boast a fuel capacity of 3000 liters. Fully air-conditioned, they have a range of 500 nautical miles and are powered by two 2,300-horsepower outboard engines, capable of reaching maximum speeds of 45 knots and cruising speeds of 25 knots. With the addition of these vessels, NIMASA now possesses seven fast intervention bulletproof Aresa boats, slated for deployment in the near future.
