The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi has been named the “Iconic Maritime Personality of the Year 2024” by Nigerian maritime journalists in recognition of his exceptional leadership and contributions to the sector.

The award ceremony, which is being organized by all maritime media practitioners, is slated for Thursday, January 16, 2025, at the Apapa Port Customs Command Auditorium, starting at 12 noon.

The event represents a unique collaboration among journalists from various maritime media associations, including the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), League of Maritime Editors (LOME), Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON), Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN), Online Maritime Media Association of Nigeria (OMMAN), and Congress of Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CONMMEP).

The Chairman of the event’s Planning Committee, Mr. Dele Aderibigbe, highlighted Adeniyi’s impactful tenure as Comptroller-General, noting his success in repositioning the Nigeria Customs Service as a proactive and internationally aligned agency. Under Adeniyi’s leadership, the Customs service has achieved remarkable progress in revenue collection, anti-smuggling efforts, trade facilitation, ICT-driven modernization, and inter-agency collaboration.

“This honour is significant and unprecedented,” said Aderibigbe. “For the first time in the maritime sub-sector, journalists across all associations are coming together to recognize a performer of this caliber. Comptroller-General Adeniyi has demonstrated purposeful, professional, and patriotic leadership, making the Customs Service a source of pride for Nigeria.”

The event is expected to attract key stakeholders in the maritime and trade sectors, celebrating a leader whose tenure has fostered innovation and strengthened Nigeria’s position in global trade.
