President of the Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNO/WTSSA); Engineer Bob Yousuo has been inaugurated as the Chair of Africa Seafarers during the 46th International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Global Congress in Marrakesh, Morocco.
His emergence, following a recent election at the ITF Regional Congress in Côte d’Ivoire, marks a significant milestone in advancing the rights and unity of African seafarers.
Yousuo, a seasoned maritime professional, also received the honor of being appointed as the Africa Chair for the Fair Practice Committee Steering Group (FPCSG).
His vast experience and deep knowledge of seafaring issues across the continent made the appointment a well-deserved recognition, bringing an air of excitement and prestige to the congress.

In his acceptance speech, Engr  Yousuo addressed the assembly with a message of unity and gratitude. He began by congratulating Stephen Cotton on his re-election as ITF Secretary General and applauded the leadership of ITF President Garry Paddy for his dynamic and cautious approach. He also expressed appreciation to the ITF Africa delegates, particularly acknowledging the Nigerian contingent for their unwavering support.

Reaffirming the importance of the ITF as a globally- recognized and respected workers’ union, Yousuo emphasized that over 90% of world trade is transported by sea, with seafarers playing a vital role in this challenging task.

He described his role as the Chair of Africa Seafarers as a “herculean task” but one that he is committed to fulfilling with determination and dedication.

“As the chair of the Seafarers in Africa till the next Congress, it is my responsibility to ensure that seafarers in Africa are united to fight our common enemies, the slave masters,” he stated.

He also vowed to prioritize the protection of seafarers’ rights, advocating for fair wages and stronger Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) with shipping companies.
He highlighted the success of Nigeria’s National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC), which requires all shipping companies to have CBAs with respective unions, as a model for seafarers across Africa.

Engr Yousuo also addressed the future challenges posed by automation and man-less systems in vessel operations, acknowledging that while these technologies may improve efficiency and safety, they also reduce manpower. “We shall ensure our preparedness for this change,” he said, signaling his commitment to keeping African seafarers ready for the future of the industry.

In closing, Yousuo expressed his gratitude to the ITF leadership and his colleagues for the opportunity to serve as Chair, reaffirming his commitment to working together to elevate Africa’s seafarers to new heights. “Collectively, we shall work together to move Africa Seafarers to greater heights,” he assured.
