The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) will promote Green Environment Initiative, a global strategy that ensures environments are free from all forms of pollution.
It’s The Director-General, Dr Dakuku Peterside, made the pledge while receiving members of the Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) led by its President, Mr Dada Thomas.
According to a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by the Head, Corporate Communications in NIMASA, Mr Isichei Osamgbi, the director-general promised that NIMASA would ensure cleaner oceans and safer environment in the Nigerian maritime space.
Peterside said that the agency was strictly adhering to its enabling legislation “which is primarily to ensure safety standards and compliance in line with global best practices.’’
“Cleaner fuel is the way forward if we want our environment to be clean.
“As part of our strategies to achieve this, we need to collaborate with relevant organisations like the Nigerian Gas Association, among others,’’ the director-general said.
He said that the issue of climate change was a global phenomenon and of concern to the international community.
Peterside said that the agency would continue to lend its voice in support of the advocacy to further guarantee a safer and secured business environment.
He told the executive members of the NGA that NIMASA was open to all forms of partnerships that could help the growth and development of the Nigerian maritime sector.
“As our nation is committed to diversification, gas remains untapped; hence you can count on NIMASA in this advocacy drive,’’ the director-general said.
In his remarks, Thomas said that the mission of the NGA was to partner with NIMASA and other relevant industry players in the oil and gas sector.
The NGA president said that there should be no problem of power generation with the abundant quantity of gas in the country.
Thomas said that gas was being used all over the world as a major source of power generation and Nigeria should not be an exception.
He acknowledged NIMASA’s role in shipment of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
The NGA chief called on the management of NIMASA to join the association in its mission of achieving its four-point agenda.
According to him, these are: advocacy, promotion of gas investment in Nigeria, promotion of best practices in line with global standard and promotion of a resource centre.
