The Nigerian Institute of Shipping (NIS) is putting together a two-day professional training workshop on how to master import documentation and logistics without making mistakes.
The workshop which is designed for all members of the shipping community and others whose line of duty relates to import will hold between December 3 and 4, 2008 at the UAC training centre, Apapa, Lagos.
A statement which was released in Lagos by the Institute’s national public relations officer (PRO), Mr. Sesan Onileimo explained that the workshop is being put together to enable practitioners who are involved in import documentation and logistics to be abreast of up-to-date and contemporary techniques that are required for successful transactions.
“The economy of Nigeria is import-dependent, hence the nation records high volume of imports compared to outward-bound cargoes. Avoiding unnecessary costs and maintaining customer loyalty is simply a matter of taking time and trouble over documentation in the same manner that one would attend to other aspects of a transaction more often”, he added saying that eminent and time-tested practitioners have been lined up as resource persons for the workshop.
According to him, the vital aspect of documentation and logistics is often left in the hands of employees who neither has the experience nor the basic training required of them, hence importers and financial institutions have lost huge revenue on account of avoidable mistakes.
Highlights of the workshop will include hands-on training on customs procedure and documentation, especially under the current scheme, impact of shipping companies and terminal operators in efficient cargo delivery, global trends in import logistics and documentation, how to manage insurance claims as well as other legal issues that are involved in international trade, among other key issues.
“The workshop will take the form of formal lectures, group discussions, case studies and a practical computer session where the usefulness of information technology in today’s import logistics and documentation will be demonstrated”, he added.
The NIS spokesperson gave the names of the resource persons for the workshop to include: Customs Comptroller General, Alhaji Hamman Bello Ahmed, managing director, APM Terminal, Mr. Michael Hansen, managing director, Leadway Assurance, Mr Oye Hassan-Odukale managing director, MDS Logistics, Mr Hakeem Ogunniran. Others are: foremost freight forwarder, Mr Lucky Amiwero, Dr Iyiola Oni of the University of Lagos, business development manager of DHL Exel International, Mr Kayode Salako and a maritime consultant, Dr Obed Ndikom.
