NNPC Tackles Domestic Gas Scarcity ….Earmarks 1.2 billion bcft for domestic market

In what appear as a deliberate move to arrest the acute scarcity gas for domestic use and consumption, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said last week that it has commenced plans to deliver 1.2 billion cubic feet of gas to the domestic market.
Confirming the development during an inspection of gas facilities in the Niger Delta, the group managing director, NNPC, Mr. Mohammed Barkindo said that this will be achieved before then end of 2009 even as he added that it was aimed at meeting the 6000 Megawatt of electricity. “This is a deliberate move towards meeting the 6,000 Megawatt (MW) target for this year by the Federal Government aimed at boosting power supply in the country.”
A statement issued in Abuja last week by the NNPC quoted the agency’s boss as saying that already a sizeable volume from the projected gas supply plan was being contributed into the gas supply system.
According to him, NNPC and other stakeholders have reached an agreement on the quantity of gas that would be set aside for domestic consumption and in line with government’s directive.
In the statement, the NNPC is currently working in West Niger Delta with Panocean, NPDC, Total, Chevron, Shell, Agip and Exxon Mobil to meet the supply plan on schedule.
