On-going projects that are currently being embarked upon by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in the areas of port and infrastructural development will have positive impact on port operation, when completed by mid-2009, the managing director, Mallam Abdusallam Mohammed has assured.
The projects which are going on in all the major seaports locations in the country include the improvement of all draughts of channels and the repairs as well as renovation of some common user facilities, under infrastructural development.
The Managing Director of the NPA, Malam Abdul Salam Mohammed gave this assurance in Lagos over the weekend while exchanging views with Stakeholders who participated at the quarterly meeting of the Port Consultative Council (PCC).
He assured the stakeholders which comprised of Terminal Operators and Port Users who attended the quarterly meeting that by the time work on the projects are completed, all the bottlenecks and operational obstacles the system is experiencing will be permanently resolved.
He listed such priority projects as dredging of the channels in Lagos, Tin Can Island, Port Harcourt, Calaar and Warri Ports as well as the major repairs and renovation on some common user facilities in several port locations.

While appreciating the constraints that Stakeholders and Port Users go through in conducting their businesses in the nation’s seaports, the Managing Director, pleaded with them for understanding, assuring that the Management was striving to reduce such constraints to the barest minimum.
Malam Abdul Salam told the stakeholders that the Management of the Authority has adopted a strategic approach in confronting the challenges of the system in all their ramifications and assured them that the efforts of the Management in this regard, would soon start to manifest.
“We may not have met all our targets. We have challenges. We are aware of those challenges. We are being strategic in tackling them. With little time, we shall surmount all these challenges. We only need your understanding and further co-operation” he explained.
Earlier, the Vice Chairman of the PCC, Otumba Kunle Folarin had commended the leadership style, vision and mission of the present leadership of the NPA, adding that Stakeholders and Port Users’ now have a renewed confidence in the system.
He particularly commended the proactive posture of the Management through its good projection on its priority programmes to meet the expectations of the Stakeholders and the Ports Users.
