The Onne Port manager, Mr. Abdulahi Goje has said that the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) Onne is the major landlord to Oil and Gas Free Zone, and not the other way round.
This clarification came from the Ports Manager while ad recently in Onne, Rivers state.
Mr. Goje who was represented by the Traffic Manager of the port, Mr. John Duro Olayesaye explained that there are misconceptions which ought to be corrected.
He said that NPA is the landlord of Oil and Gas, noting that the Onne Oil and Gas Free zone is a tenant to NPA. He said that those that misunderstood the relationship should therefore take correction.
“If I may say, government sometimes misses the point. In Calabar Ports, Oil and Gas Free Zone and NPA exist differently. There is no land contention. But here in Onne, Oil and Gas exist on top of NPA, it is a big confusion”, he stressed.
Explaining the challenges of Onne Ports, Mr. Goje said that there are road challenges in accessing the Federal Ocean Lighter Terminal (FLT), Onne. He therefore called on the federal government to intervene by rehabilitating the access road to FLT, Onne.
He explained that the Onne port area has grown, recognizing the large presence of companies and vehicle traffic in the area, adding that it has become imperative to upgrade the access road for users of the port.
He also faulted the differential charges in tariffs and clearing fees between Onne and Lagos, and noted that importers are not persuaded to use the Onne ports because of high tariffs.
