NIWA Takes Zero-Accident Campaign to Abaji Waterfront Communities

By Joshua Yousouph

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has intensified its marine safety and environmental protection campaign in waterfront communities within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as the rainy season reaches its peak, raising water levels and increasing environmental risks along inland waterways.

The sensitization exercise, held on Wednesday at the Abaji Area Council by the NIWA Abuja Area/Liaison Office, focused on promoting safe navigation practices and environmental stewardship among residents living and working around the waterways.

The campaign forms part of the Federal Government’s zero-tolerance policy on waterways accidents and infractions, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking during the exercise, the Abuja Area Manager of NIWA, Hajia Aisha Eri, appreciated the host communities for their continued cooperation and assured them of the Authority’s commitment to protecting lives, property and the nation’s inland waterways.

She urged boat operators, passengers and other water users to adhere strictly to safety regulations, noting that sustained public enlightenment remains critical to reducing accidents, particularly during the peak of the rainy season.

Also speaking, the Emir of Kwali, HRH Alhaji Adamu Saba Aguma, commended NIWA for bringing the safety awareness campaign to the community. He pledged the traditional institution’s full support in safeguarding the waterways and ensuring compliance with all prescribed safety measures.

Other traditional rulers, including John Dogole, District Head of Kundu; Mohammed Yusuf, Sarkin Tungbufu; Ayahaya Nassarawa, Sarkin Nassarawa; Musa Wabai, Sarkin Kutara; Musa Alanana, Sarkin Kwago and Padama; and Abdullahi Kwakwa, Sarkin Kwakwa, also expressed appreciation for the initiative. They assured NIWA of their commitment to implementing the safety lessons and mobilizing their communities to comply with established regulations.

The sensitization campaign is part of a nationwide directive by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, mandating regular engagement with littoral communities to improve safety awareness and reduce water transport accidents.

In line with the directive, the Acting Managing Director of NIWA, Alhaji Umar Yusuf Girei, has instructed all Area Offices of the Authority to prioritize continuous safety sensitization across their operational areas.

The NIWA Abuja Area Office is expected to continue the campaign next week in other littoral communities within and around the FCT as part of efforts to strengthen safety compliance and environmental protection on the nation’s inland waterways.
