The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has released its 2012 performance report in which it said that the ports witnessed increase in container traffic compared to 20122 performances

Statistics released by the agency  and signed by its general manager, public affairs, Capt Iheanacho Ebubeogu on Tuesday showed that the empty Container throughput was 1,575,194TEUs, representing an increase of 11% over the same period of 2011, which was 1,413,276TEUs

Laden container throughput was 877,737TEUs, a rise of 7.4% over 2011 figure of 817,246TEUs, while the ports recorded importation of  268,026 units of vehicles, an increase of 16% over 2011 figure of 231,423 units.

There was an improvement in berth occupancy rate, which stood at  44.9% in 2012; an improvement  of 4% over the 44.5% rate in 2011.

Going further, the statement stated that, “there was no record of fire incident in all the ports in the year under review”, even as  it stressed that the accident-free record is a justification of the various  efforts of the management of NPA in ensuring that the right safety standards are entrenched in all the nation’s seaports.

“The ever-creasing result being posted in this regard could be attributed to continuous regular capital and maintenance dredging and the 100% completion of the wrecks removal exercise in our channels”.

According to the statement, ‘the Managing Director NPA, Mallam Habib Abdullahi, has said that with the support of the Federal Government, the Authority will remain focused in  its determination to constantly upgrade and improve port infrastructures in order to attract neighboring countries that are transacting business with NPA.”
