Strong indications have emerged that embattled tally clerks and security men; all members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria who are been owed about 20 months arrears of salary will soon be paid.
Shipping Position Weekly confirmed last week that ahead of the payment, a verification exercise to ascertain the actual number of the employees that are affected has commenced in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Onne, Warri and Calabar ports.
The verification team comprises of representatives of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the union.
Comrade Ibrahim Isa Sale, vice president general of the union led a committee on a verification exercise last week to Rivers and Onne ports.
The verification committee spent two days to verify the number of tally clerks and security men on board.
Comrade Abdul Eroje, national organising secretary of the union said the team has full support of NPA and assured that the agency will use the findings in the implementation of conditions of service for dockworkers in Nigeria.
Shipping Position Weekly also confirmed that the committee is billed to visit Calabar port.
Similarly, a training programme for all categories of dockworkers in the Rivers port has just been rounded off. Sources hinted that the exercise was meant to educate the dockworkers on safety requirements and standards at the place of work as well as bring them abreast of latest developments at the ports.
