The Nigerian Shippers' Council (NCS) last week said it would equip maritime journalists with continuous training for the public to be more informed about the potentials of the maritime industry.
The Executive Secretary of the NSC; Mr Hassan Bello, stated this in Lagos in a message to a two- day training with the theme; `A New Port Order: A New Maritime Media’.

The Executive Secretary of the NSC; Mr Hassan Bello, stated this in Lagos in a message to a two- day training with the theme; `A New Port Order: A New Maritime Media’.
The well-attended event had members of Maritime Correspondents Organisation of Nigeria (MARCON) , Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) and officials from the Public Relations department of the Nigerian Shippers Council in attendance.
He said that the training would encourage effective media practice.
“This is the only way we can encourage maritime journalists to enable them compete with energy reporters as well as aviation reporters.
“A forum like this would stand as a tool to enable the Federal Government to achieve port order regime which will make Nigerian ports to be preferred.
“For Nigerian ports to be the hub in West Africa, it could not be achieved alone but with your reportage, ‘’ Bello said.
He urged maritime reporters to convince the public of the numerous maritime potential which could be major revenue earners.
Bello advised journalists to improve daily activities based on available technology, adding that they should also improve on their academic qualifications.
The executive secretary however urged maritime journalists to always play their roles creditably as agents of change.
Mr Nweke, while also speaking in the topic: An appraisal of the Nigerian maritime media – Past, Present and Future, urged the media to objective in their report even as he stressed the need for reporters to verify their facts before publishing.
Nweke acknowledged that there has been a tremendous improvement in the maritime media, but advised the participants to understand the sector in a broader scope.
According to him, some reporters need to understand the sector as resident reporters, in order not to misconstrue their facts.
Others that spoke at the two-day training include: Mr. Kunle Ogendengbe, on the topic "Corporate Communications strategy’ and also on ‘Media relations management’ on day one.
Other resource persons included Mr. Lanre Idowu who spoke on "Ethics and Professionalism in Contemporary Media Practice, and a host of others.
