NUPENG Excited, Says Tanker Accidents Has Reduced On Nigerian Roads

The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has commended its members, saying that efforts by the union have paid-off in ensuring that there was a reduction in the number of road accidents on Nigerian roads involving petroleum tankers.
The union said it was able to achieve this feat through its partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other relevant government enforcement agencies in the haulage sector.
South-West Chairman of NUPENG, Comrade Tokunbo Korodo in an exclusive chat with Shipping Position Daily said that the leadership of the tanker drivers had also recently embarked on a nationwide training for all tanker drivers on steering; he noted that this is already producing results.
Comrade Korodo also disclosed that the union had issued an ultimatum to all tanker owners and drivers on the need to acquire and commence the use of the ‘EMCO fitting’ on loaded tankers in order to curtail spillage in case of any accident. He said that this is in line with international standard.  
Disclosing recent strides taken by the union, he said:  “We are in strong partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corp concerning the safety on the road, because a healthy truck is an asset to the owner and the driver and no driver prays to embark on a journey of no return”
“We are partnering with the road safety and all petroleum tankers have been given an ultimatum and the ultimatum has elapsed, the instruction is that they must have EMCO fitting for their tankers”
“The use of the EMCO fitting is to curtail spillage in case of any accident, it would stop the spillage from the sealing verve, and recently the leadership of the tanker drivers embarked on a nationwide training for all tanker drivers on steering, this is already producing results”
“If you look at the situation now, you will find out that accident involving petroleum tankers on our highways have reduced drastically, we engage the services of Federal Road Safety Corp, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in Lagos, OYES in Ibadan, TRACE in Ogun state, State VIOs, Civil Defence Corp and all other relevant enforcement institutions in the haulage industry were all engaged to train the drivers on steering” he said.
Comrade Korodo maintained that petroleum tanker drivers of yesteryears are different from the present day drivers; they are now well-composed and well-trained.
“When they are leaving home, their loved ones are greeting them with the hope that they will come back safely, so whatever policy that is put in place to ensure the safety of our members on the highways and other road users will be embraced by our union in order for us to have sanity on the road”
“This life has no duplicate, so our drivers must comply with the policy of the FRSC on the usage of tires, the present leadership of the Federal Road Safety Corp is rising up to the challenge and responsibility to make the roads more safer for everybody”, he said.
