Even as the maritime industry watches the unfolding politics over the appointment of a substantive Registrar/ Chief Executive Officer, for the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN), some prominent names have been scooped as gunning for the position.

Recall that the position of Registrar of CRFFN became vacant in February following the expiration of the first tenure of Barrister Samuel Nwakohu.

Investigation by Shipping Position Daily has confirmed that about 10 people have so far applied for the position of the Registrar of the Council, following the advert placement placed two weeks ago calling for applications from qualified candidates for the position.

Findings by our correspondent revealed that topping the list of applicants that have so far applied for the position is the immediate past registrar of the council Barr. Sam Nwakohu, former President of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) Mr. Eugene Nweke, the current acting registrar; Mrs. Chinyere Uromta and a member of the current governing council of CRFFN representing the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

A source who is close to the committee that is handling the selection process, but who pleaded anonymity, also informed our correspondent that although the current registrar of NAGAFF Academy; Mr Francis Omotosho is yet to submit his application for the position, he has however indicated  interested in the position.

The source further informed that even though the deadline for the submission of application is Tuesday, 7th April, 2023, the council is happy with the calibre of people who have so-far shown interest in the position.

He noted that the qualifications expected of those who desire the position will be followed strictly, even as he insisted that applicants above the age of 60 years won’t be considered for the position.

Recall that the listed qualifications expected of those willing to take up the position include, that the applicants must hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with minimum of 10 years cognate experience in freight forwarding business in Nigeria. He must also possess membership in a relevant professional body and must be computer literate with knowledge of ICT application

The Council also stated that the applicant must not be less than 50 years and not more than 60 years old, with no record of criminal offence.

Other skills expected of the applicant include: “Must have management and administrative experience, must be a team leader driven by results, excellent interpersonal skills, diplomacy, charismatic and accommodative with good written and spoken communication skills.

The Council stated in the advertisement that the deadline for the submission of all applications is Tuesday, 7th April, 2023.

However, when our correspondent asked two of those whose names have been mentioned among those applying for the position, there was no outright denial or confirmation.

In a telephone chat with the current acting registrar of the council, Mrs. Chinyere Uromta, she simply said: “Nobody have asked me that question about whether I am applying or not, just hold your peace for now”.

On his part, the former NAGAFF President; Mr Eugene Nweke expressed shock over the report. He also simply said: “Who said this to you, I only requested for the soft copy of the advert placement by CRFFN”
