Stakeholders operating at the Seme Border of the Nigeria Customs Service have lamented the lack of examination bay where cargoes coming through the borders can be examined.

Also, amidst rumors that two people may have contacted the deadly Ebola virus at Cotonou; Nigeria’s border with Benin Republic from Seme, the Nigeria Customs Service as well as other stakeholders at the Seme border have started carrying out series of enlightenment campaign for businessmen at the border.

Chapter chairman of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) at the Seme Border, Mr. Patrick Ozobialu in an exclusive interview with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week revealed that the association, in partnership with customs and the Port Health has commenced the distribution of free hand sanitizers.

Ozobialu equally called on the government to provide incentives in order to allow for an examination bay at the border where cargoes will be examined.

He said: "We had a lecture on Ebola, we deliberately chose our general meeting where everybody was invited and the health workers were present to lecture us more.

"Apart from this, we also had an awareness through customs and all the security agencies in an open field, so the people of Seme cannot say they are not aware, we have propagated it so high"

"We also bought the hand sanitizers and shared it to people, this is the gateway to the economy of the country and it must be protected"

"We also heard from the health people that two people were suspected to have contacted Ebola the disease at Cotonou, so we used the medium as well to warn".

He said that all these are being done to ensure that the borders are not closed as being suggested to the Federal Government.

Ozobialu said that the stakeholders at Seme Border are trying to have an examination bay, and that it is asking for incentives from government to put a hard surface to the environment that has been mapped out for over two years.
