Without being detected, pirates recently plundered NZ$20,000 (about US$16,387) of specialized salvage equipment that had been on board the barge RNG280 as it sailed through the Strait of Malacca on its way from Singapore to Tauranga, The New Zealand Herald reported today.
The equipment was to be used in the salvage of the container ship Rena, which sank off the coast of New Zealand.

The pirates had probably watched as the equipment was being loaded, and then climbed on board at night to break into the containers, according to Frank Lecky of Resolve Salvage and Fire, the company tasked with carving up Rena’s bow.
Rena salvage operations remain on schedule.
