As a result of the bad roads in Lagos State, coupled with steady rainfall, auto traders have said that Sport Utility Vehicles simply known as (SUV) are in high demand by customers who are willing to buy cars.

Traders of vehicles have disclosed that a large number of buyers go for SUV brands despite the economic situation of the country.

Brands like: Nissan Xterra and Pathfinder are mostly wanted by buyers in Lagos state while others who can afford more expensive brands prefer Honda Pilot and Infiniti and Nissan Murano but the price tag has made many to decline for the cheaper Nissan brands.

But when asked why the abrupt change in demand, the operators simply responded by saying "because of the rain and the poor state of our roads".

Some of the importers and traders told Auto Port Weekly that the demand for SUV is currently making waves in the fairly used auto market this rainy season.

The demand of the brands has been high this season, even as indications have shown that importation of used SUV might increase soon.

Auto Port Weekly also sampled opinions of importers and gathered that the deplorable state of most of the roads in the state also gave rise to the demand for SUVs.

An importer, Ezinne Paul disclosed to Auto Port Weekly that 85% of vehicles demanded by buyers fall under the SUV range.

Ezinne added that buyers prefer such brands because it can withstand any roads in Lagos.

According to the importer, the price of SUV still remains the same despite the demand.

He added that a Nissan Xterra 2000/ 2001 model still  goes for N1.4 million while Nissan Pathfinder 2000 /2001 Model goes for N1.3 million respectively.

A dealer at Freedom Park in Mile 2; Mr. Austine Nnoli stressed that the brands are always in high demand during rainy season and also due to the nature of the Nigerian roads.

Stop Importation Of Used Cars To Have A Vehicle Manufacturing Industry – South Africa Tell Nigeria

Nigeria has approached South Africa for help in advancing our moribund vehicle manufacturing sector and also help with technical assistance to create a market for the industry. In response the South African Minister for trade and investment responded by saying.
And as a first step it is considering a limitation on used-car imports.
As we all very well know Nigerians import millions of second hand used cars everyday as a means of personal transportation. New cars are expensive in Nigeria since they are also imported. Assembling them in Nigeria, will make them cheaper import fees will be eliminated and government incentives will be available for the formative years of the sector. However, even if the government grants incentives, imported used cars may still be cheaper a situation that may increase loss of investments for investors.
It will be interesting to see how this pans out considering the influence and cartels in the used cars industry. Nigerians will also revolt as newer cars are expensive to buy and to finance.
