The Apapa, Lagos- based Citizenship and Leadership Sea School Training has offered its facilities to cadets of Stars Maritime Academy for training on coastal and other marine related education.

The Apapa, Lagos- based Citizenship and Leadership Sea School Training has offered its facilities to cadets of Stars Maritime Academy for training on coastal and other marine related education.
The one week training programme which has ended was centered on creating awareness for cadets within the environment in which they could find themselves and to afford them the opportunity to understand what their courses entail.
Justifying the programme, the institution’s   Head of Department, Shipping Management, Mr Chris Sadoh explained that part from classroom training; there is the need for cadets to understand what goes on at the sea also.
Sadoh who led 15 students from the academy to the Sea School recently told Shipping Position Daily in Lagos, that the training was designed to give his students an edge over others that spend much times on classroom work.
He said that the one week programme by students from his academy attracts a certificate from the sea school which according to him is an added advantage to them.
He noted that the training was opened to all students from Stars Maritime Academic irrespective of the class.
He said “the training was basically for them to be familiar with the terms and terminology associated with sea and the benefits are numerous to them.’’
According to him,  ‘’the students are now  familiar with swimming and they can be able to swim when the need arises at sea, thus whenever there is any form of distress at sea they will be able to know what to do at the right time’’.
‘’The training also enlightened students on fire safety at sea which has to do with  a situation when there is fire onboard a vessel they can be sable  handle the situation as well’’.
He also stated that the training that was given to the students is the same training that is given in Ghana which most marine students believe is better.
Sadoh noted that apart from technicality in training cadets, there is also need to make them to gain sea experience, adding that before a student can graduate from a maritime institution, it is a must to undergo and understand what is obtainable at sea.
‘’Most of the activities we are talking about when it comes to maritime training encompasses sea and land,  those who study marine engineering and nautical sciences must know much about the water because that is the place they will find themselves after graduating from school’’, he pointed out, even as he acknowledged that  the one week training is not enough for the cadets but affirmed that they would be able to defend themselves whenever they encounter distress at sea.
Sadoh said that the training is more of an introductory aspect at sea for cadets from Stars Maritime Academy.
