• DG calls for staff nominal roll, scrutinises qualifications, to redeploy staff to areas of core competence
Palpable fear has enveloped the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) following news that the new director general, Mr Temisan Omatseye has called for the agency staff list to ascertain the suitability of officers for their present disposition.
Shipping Position Weekly confirmed that many of those who are presently occupying some juicy positions got them; courtesy of their alleged closeness to the immediate past director general, Dr Ade Dosunmu.
Our source who pleaded that we should not go to town yet with details of what have already been discovered however hinted that some management and very senior staff who are perceived to be close to the former helmsman and who took advantage of this are also going to be affected in the imminent shake up.
While the action is expected to cut across all departments and units, areas most likely to be affected are departments that are regarded as very core to the mandate of the agency.
“It is not going to involve any job loss, but a pure attempt to completely professionalise NIMASA and ensure that round pegs are put in round holes, it is possible that some people were just put where they are at the pleasure of the former DG, but that is not how to run a maritime administration agency or any establishment for that mater”, our source disclosed.
It was also confirmed that, although it is not statutorily expected of him, the new DG has intimated the National Assembly’s committees on marine transport about his intention to carry out the shake-up.
