The Shippers Association of Lagos State (SALS) has advised the incoming Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to revisit the auto policy, saying that no success has been recorded since its inception.

The Shippers Association of Lagos State (SALS) has advised the incoming Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to revisit the auto policy, saying that no success has been recorded since its inception.

In a chat with Auto Port Weekly in Lagos last week, President of SALS , Reverend Jonathan Nicol said that for the country to benefit from the policy, there is need for the manufacturers to meet the taste and standards of the people

Nicol stated that the brands , currently rolled out by the manufacturers are not in line with what Nigerians prefer, adding that the government is compelling masses to buy sub-standard vehicles.

He noted that the automotive policy is another critical issue the Buhari led administration needs to tackle saying that it is on priority list

He further described the auto policy as anti-local content at the moment, stressing that the policy should also focus on cost reduction on the vehicles assembled in Nigeria.

The SALS president alleged that the manufacturers import majority of the acclaimed locally assembled cars, noting that the assembly plants have not commenced in full capacity .

He said that for importers to support the government on the policy on vehicle manufacturing in Nigeria, there is need to put in place an enabling environment for such business to thrive.

"What they are doing now is that they are importing cars into the country massively and they sell these cars about the same amount that you can get a better fairly used cars which can as well last longer because of the body work and the standard quality"

"We believe that the automotive policy should come on when all the factories involved are operational ,with all infrastructures on ground and with that we can support them"
