The Nigerian Shippers’ Council in collaboration with a maritime non-governmental organisation, Centre for Transparency in Maritime Practice is set to embark on a sensitization and enlightenment programme for importers of vehicle and automobile spare parts in the country.
The programme is expected to hold this week at the popular Trade Fair complex situated along the Lagos-Badagry expressway.
The Nigerian Shippers’ Council in collaboration with a maritime non-governmental organisation, Centre for Transparency in Maritime Practice is set to embark on a sensitization and enlightenment programme for importers of vehicle and automobile spare parts in the country.
The programme is expected to hold this week at the popular Trade Fair complex situated along the Lagos-Badagry expressway.
The enlightenment programme will be attended by various importer associations from the informal sector of the maritime industry with the purpose of creating awareness on documentation of their consignments before clearance from the seaports of Nigeria.
Chairman, Board Of Trustees of the Centre for Transparency in Maritime Practice, Mr Emmanuel Osuala Nwagbara on the essence of the programme said that the importers are the key stakeholders in the country even as he added that they do not have a say in port operations when compared to other stakeholders in the maritime industry.
Nwagbara, a maritime lawyer, said that importers contribute immensely to the economy of the country, thus government needs to take them seriously.
He noted that most of the importers do not know how their imports are handled by the clearing agents pointing out that there is need for them to understand how things are done in the clearing processes.
According to him, the programme is targeted at importers across the 36 states of the federation.
The BoT chairman added that the train will move from the Trade Fair complex to the Ladipo market which is largest spare part market in West Africa, then to the biggest fairly-used automobile market in Africa which is the Berger Automobile Market, spare part market at Alaba international market.
He added that the programme will also take place at the popular Onitsha market, Nnewi, Aba, Kano and other states where importation is high.
Nwagbara noted that importers of other consignment in the country will also benefit from the programme as it will be in batches.
He however added that NGO is established to aid the importers whenever there is crisis with their imports.
