Petroleum Tanker Driver, (PTD), branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Worners, (NUPENG) last week had its maiden training programme for their members.
The  programme themed ‘Drivers Certification for Safety on Wheels’ is meant to make the tanker driver a better road user.
Besides, a sped limiting device was also introduced to drivers  to members with a view to ensuring the safety of other road users.
Speaking at the ceremony, PTD’s National Chairman, Comrade Salmon Akanni Oladiti said that the training programme will address three major components of the petroleum driving profession and these includes skill, health and ethics.
Oladiti told members of the group to ensure that whenever they are behind the wheel, every iota of caution must be observed adding that everybody should work hard with a view to improving the economy.
He said “ We should drive, eat, relate and behave to see the better and greater days that are coming slowly and steadily.
“Our driving should be done in such a way that it will demonstrate thatr we are neither on suicide mission nor on free way to prison for wilful manslaughter.
“Rather you should be working hard for an improved tomorrow  for yourself, your family and society in general.”
Speaking in similar vein, Corps Narshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC), Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi said that the training programme was a step towards a safety management regime on the orads.
Oyeyemi also said that  the move will also curtail the menace caused by tanker drivers on the roads adding that so many lives have been lost to tanker crashes.
He disclosed that over 120 lives  and unquantified amount of properties  were lost to tanker crashes between the months and July 2015
