Toyota Lead Vehicles Importation Into The Country As Hyundai Edged Kia

According to general import statistics from the nation’s seaports, a total of 51,290 vehicles were imported into the country and Toyota accounted for 38 per cent of the total import during the period.

According to general import statistics from the nation’s seaports, a total of 51,290 vehicles were imported into the country and Toyota accounted for 38 per cent of the total import during the period.
The Korean brands, Hyundai and Kia also showed remarkable progress on the importation table during the period with a total of 14,317 vehicles. The Chinese brands also doubled their import statistics in 2011.
Hyundai’s share of the import stood at about 8, 3901 vehicles as against Kia’s 5,926. With this, Hyundai has powered ahead of Kia by a very wide margin.
Although Hyundai imported more vehicles than Kia in 2010, it widened the gap in 2011, an indication that the number one Korean auto maker is beginning to reclaim its position in Nigeria.
The Chinese brands also showed a remarkable improvement with a total import of 4,508 vehicles in 2011 against 2,356 vehicles in 2010, while Ford brought in 2,653 vehicles.
Both Nissan and Honda recorded a decrease in importation with 1,849 and 1,562 vehicles respectively as against 1,660 and 2,303 vehicles in 2010 respectively. The poor performance of the two Japanese brands could be attributed to the impact of last year’s Tsunami which devastated Japan.
Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Isuzu, Chevrolet and Subaru; all had improved performance when compared to their 2010 import, while Tata and Suzuki went the way of Nissan and Honda by importing fewer vehicles.
