TUC Hails Senate Over Petroleum Industry Bill

The Trade Union  Congress has given  kudos to the Senate for the steady progress that the Petroleum Industry Bill is enjoying in the upper legislature. The union said last week in a statement that the recent successful scaling of the second reading at the Senate is an indication that both the petroleum bill as well as the gas flaring bill would scale through legislative hurdles and become laws before the end of the year. 
According to the statement, President-General and Secretary-General, Comrade Peter Esele and Chief John Kolawole, the TUC expressed optimism that the two bills would greatly transform the nation’s oil and gas sector.
 “The passage of the Gas prohibition Act and the successful second reading of the Petroleum Industry Bill is commendable as they are coming at a period when the entire National Assembly is under intense public bashing over what they perceives as underperformance, shows that our law makers are waking up to their primary responsibility which off-course is to make good laws for the country”, the union stressed.

Expressing hope that he  two bills will stop the unfair treatment that Nigeria oil and gas sector is exposed to, the TUC added that : “ We reckon that when the petroleum industry bill is finally passed into law, it will among others remove the country from the shackles of International Oil Company (IOC) that has constantly harassed and undermined our systems”.
“It will also help in the specialization of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) as it will remove the organization from the present status of “jack of all trades” and “master of none”, to a more serious business entity capable of challenging other oil majors the world over”, the statement added.
