Five members of the Seamen/Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) were last week Wednesday, 25th of May 2022, attacked by unknown gunmen in Anambra state.

The five members of the union who were said to be going on an official assignment organised by NIWA were shot by the unknown gun men at the Otu Junction, Nnewi South Local government of the state

According to the union, the gunmen claimed that the MWUN officials strayed into Biafra Land in a Nigeria branded utility vehicle.

Briefing newsmen on Tuesday in Lagos, the President General of the union, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju disclosed that three bullets were extracted by the medical team from the neck of one of the attacked officials at the Nnewi General Hospital where they were rushed to.

The union stated that it finds the incessant, unprovoked and persistent attacks on innocent Nigerians and the working masses by those who claim to be unknown gunmen as not only extrajudicial and barbaric, but also a pointer to the failure of the security apparatus and of the state to live up to its primary function of providing protection for its citizens.

The union questioned what the state governments are doing with the security funds allocated to them, while stating the seeming insensitivity of governments to the plight of its citizens and the working masses is not only an affront to the need to survive, but more on the right to life and existence.

It urged that the issue of unknown gunmen should be tackled and managed so as to guarantee free and safe movements of citizens from one part of part of the country to the other.

“The Martine Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) wishes to inform the General Public of the unwanted ambush, shooting, maiming and infliction of injury on five of our officials who were going for an official assignment on Wednesday 25 May 2022 at Otu Junction, Nnewi South, Anambra State by unknown gun men.

“They were traveling in their official Nigerian Inland Water Ways Authority (NIWA) branded hilux when they were attacked and that they strayed into Biafra land in a Nigeria branded sport utility vehicle”, Comrade Adeyanju said.

“Reportedly, three bullets were extracted by the medical team from the neck of one of the attacked official, rushed to the Nnewi General Hospital”, he added.

The union however commended the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority; Dr. George Moghalu “for his prompt response which enabled medical assistance to our injured members”.

“At this very sensitive period in the life of Nigerians, we find the incessant, unprovoked and persistent attacks on innocent Nigerians and the working masses by those who claim to be unknown gunmen as not only extra-judicial and barbaric, but also a pointer to the failure of the security apparatus and of the state to live up to its primary function of providing protection for its citizens”, the union stressed.

“This seeming insensitivity of Governments to the suffering plight of its citizens and the working masses is not only an affront to our need to survive, but more on our right to life and existence.

“The issue of unknown gunmen, should be tackled and managed so as to guarantee the movement of citizens from one part of the country to the other”, he said.
