The West African Road Transport Union (WARTU) has stressed the need for transport regulatory agencies to start regulating transport unions.
The President of the association, Mr. Aloga Ogbogo, made the call in an interview with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos.
Aloga who is also the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), said in as much as there is freedom of association, the associations also needs to be regulated.
He maintained that transportation did not start and end at Apapa and Tin Can.
“I am aware that there is an association of truck owners and they are together now, but then there is freedom of associations. So anybody who wants to form anything is at liberty to do that. But, I have said at different fora that the regulatory agencies should begin to regulate the transport unions and associations, they should regulate them”, he said.
“Transportation is not about Apapa and Tin Can, if you say you are a transport union, what spread do you have, who are your members these are the things that the regulatory agencies need to be putting in place. Transportation does not start and end in Apapa alone” he concluded.
