A massive explosion in a riverfront industrial area in the Chinese port city of Ningbo has killed two people and injured at least 30 others, the Chinese government has confirmed.
The explosion occurred in the early morning of Sunday November 26, 2017, and early reports suggest it began at a factory, however police continue to investigate.
In 2015, China suffered a major explosion at Tianjin Port that claimed the lives of 173 people and led to mass enquiries into the negligence of Chinese authorities with regard to industrial practices.
That another major explosion has taken place two years on from the Tianjin blast is bound to raise questions once more.
The blast in Ningbo, a port city just south of Shanghai, knocked down residential buildings as well as claiming lives.
Reports suggest that bystanders stated the explosion may have been caused by a gas pipeline that was damaged during demolition work – a claim denied by the Ningbo gas company – according to CBS News.
Ningbo is famed as a major international port city that specialises in automobile manufacturing, being home to Geely, the Chinese owner of Volvo.
The Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan is one of the busiest in the world in terms of pure tonnage, and at present there are no suggestions the port is on lockdown.
