The incident which happened recently, according to eye witness account occurred on the way from Opobo town after attendin, a burial programme at Epellema, an Opobo Community. Dagogo Eli Legg – Jack is the Deputy Chairman of PDP in Rivers State.
Our correspondent gathered that the incident happened at about 4.20pm soon after the party stalwart left Epellema, the venue of the programme.
According to one of the victims whose name could not be ascertain as at press time, he said over- speeding on the part of the boat driver could not be ruled out, as the boat was said to be negotiating a bend in a high speed before the incident occurred.
A source said that two of the police men in the boat lost their rifles as they were struggling to swim to safety.
We gathered that as the victims were struggling to swim to safety, a rescue boat appeared that saved the lives of all the boat occupants and the driver.
However, a source in the community said that the same spot on the Epellama river in Opobo had witnessed similar boat mishaps in the past which have claimed about 10 lives.
Efforts made to speak to the PDP deputy chairman over the incident proved abortive.
