The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) is set to resume its suspended strike action after failed negotiations with Shipping companies regarding the Minimum Standard Condition of Service as agreed by the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) in the shipping sector.

The union in a press statement issued on Wednesday by John Ikemefuna head of media, MWUN said the union under the leadership of President-General Com.Adewale Adeyanju threatened to resume the suspended strike action scheduled to commence on Monday, October 30, 2023, after the collapse of talks due to the Shipping Employers’ representatives’ lack of commitment.

Adeyanju informed that the strike action had been postponed earlier, owing to the intervention of the former  Minister of Transportation who  had assembled a technical committee consisting of representatives from both the union and shipping employers, aiming to find a solution to the prolonged NJIC issue.

MWUN informed that despite three rounds of meetings, a resolution remained elusive explaining that the negotiations took a dramatic turn when the shipping employers’ representatives began exhibiting a lackadaisical attitude, hinting at their inability to make concrete decisions.

Adeyanju further informed that with the seven-day ultimatum set to expire, solidarity in this action will be displayed by the other three branches of the union, namely:Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dockworkers, and Seafarers.
