Customs Urges Stakeholders To Embrace Cargo Tracking System

The Port and Terminal Multiservices Ltd. (PTML) Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has urged stakeholders to embrace the Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS) to strengthen cargo security, facilitate trade and improve revenue assurance.

The Customs Area Controller of the command, Deputy Comptroller Nura Miko, made the call on Tuesday in Lagos at a stakeholders’ sensitisation workshop on the deployment of the ECTS.

Miko said the PTML Command was selected as the second pilot location for the initiative after its successful rollout at the Apapa Area Command.

He said the deployment was part of the NCS modernisation and digitalisation programme.

He said the ECTS would replace the traditional practice of physically escorting cargo in transit to bonded terminals, other Customs commands and Free Trade Zones, noting that rising trade volumes had made the system inefficient and unsustainable.

According to him, the technology will enable real-time cargo monitoring, detect route deviations and seal tampering, prevent cargo diversion, optimise manpower deployment and strengthen revenue collection through enhanced cargo visibility.

He added that the system would also accelerate cargo clearance, reduce logistics costs, improve transparency and enhance the security of goods in transit.

Miko urged stakeholders to support the initiative to ensure its successful implementation and maximise its benefits for the nation’s trade ecosystem.

Earlier, Deputy Comptroller, PTML,  Regina Owan, said the deployment of the ECTS underscored the Nigeria Customs Service’s commitment to leveraging technology to safeguard cargo integrity, facilitate legitimate trade and strengthen border security.

The workshop was organised to sensitise stakeholders on the procedures, operational framework and expectations for the implementation of the Electronic Cargo Tracking System.
