The Port of Lazaro Cardenas reported healthy volume growth for containers and autos in the first half of the year.
The Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas 14% growth in container volumes in the first six months of the year and the automotive sector saw a 3% increase.
The Port of Lazaro Cardenas is the largest Mexican seaport and one of the largest seaports in the Pacific Ocean basin. It is a major logistics hub for North American-Asian trade.
Container movement performed strongly, with a total of 1.27 million teu, growing by 14% compared to the previous year. The share by type of operation was distributed as follows: 29% imports, 30% exports and 41% transhipment. In terms of cargo entry and exit modes, 75% was by road and 25% by rail, demonstrating the Port’s multimodal infrastructure.
In the automotive sector, 339,091 units were moved from January to June, representing a 3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Imports accounted for 72% and exports for 28%, with General Motors, Toyota, Mazda, BYD and KIA standing out as customers.
In addition, three new companies joined the port: Hongqi, Sunwin -specialising in buses, and Xiaomi – focused on electric vehicles, with more than 1,900 units imported.
The Port of Lazaro Cardenas handled a total of 13.4 million tonnes. This positive trend in cargo handling strengthens the port as one of the country’s main logistics hubs.
The results for the first half of the year reflect the operational capacity of the Port of Lazaro Cardenas to meet the demands of international trade, as well as its continued evolution and infrastructure as a logistics hub for the development of the national and regional economy.
