The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on Monday, July 27, 2025, paid a solemn tribute to the late Dr. Leon Usigbe, Abuja Bureau Chief of the Nigerian Tribune, during a condolence visit to the State House Press Gallery in Abuja.
The atmosphere at the Presidential Villa was marked by deep reflection as CGC Adeniyi joined members of the State House Press Corps to honour the memory of the veteran journalist, who passed away recently after decades of distinguished service to the journalism profession.
Signing the condolence register opened in Dr. Usigbe’s honour, Adeniyi described him as “a seasoned journalist who embodied integrity, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to the truth.”
“We have lost not just a reporter, but a voice of conscience in our democracy,” Adeniyi wrote. “Dr. Usigbe’s work consistently reflected depth, balance, and a passion for truth—qualities that are increasingly rare in today’s media space.”
Adeniyi, known for his longstanding engagement with the media and advocacy for institutional transparency, was visibly moved during the visit. He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, his colleagues at the Nigerian Tribune, and the entire State House Press Corps, encouraging them to find strength in the legacy Dr. Usigbe left behind.
Until his passing, Dr. Usigbe was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most respected political journalists, celebrated for his incisive analyses and fearless reporting on governance and national affairs. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the media industry, political circles, and civil society.
