The embattled ex-chairman of Tin Can Island port chapter; Mr Kayode Farinto has written a petition to the association’s board of trustees (BoT) chairman; Chief Henry Njoku in which he alleged large scale fraud from the association’s celebrated Biometric Identity card project.
In the petition dated July 8, 2013 Farinto alleged that the identity card project netted about N50Million into the association’s coffers. He alleged further that the association’s executives mismanaged the proceeds.
According to him, both individuals and corporate members of the association in all its chapters paid for the identity cards.
In the petition which was sighted by our correspondent, the ex-chapter chairman told the BoT chair that after payment of both corporate and individual levy for biometrics, the National Executive Committee realized about N50Million
Calling on the board to investigate the allegations, he threatened to go to court, even as he also threatened to petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
He gave a chapter-by-chapter breakdown of the alleged collections: Apapa- N5.238Millon, PTML-N2.558Million, Kano- N439,000, Lillypond- N1.785Million, Port Harcourt-N4.690Million, Abuja-N1.517Million, Idiroko-N634000, Seme-N8.433Million, Murtala Airport-N6.649Million and Tin Can port- N8.010Million
Shipping Position Daily confirmed that, jolted by the petition, the board invited the petitioner to a meeting at a hotel in Apapa on Thursday last week.
At the meeting that was attended by all members of the board, Farinto was reportedly pleaded with to withdraw the court case he had instituted against the association as a result of the controversial elections in his chapter.
He was reportedly assured also that the petition against the AAOCIATION’S national executive committee would be looked into.
When contacted for reactions on Friday, the BoT chairman confirmed Friday’s meeting, but was evasive about the petition.
