In continuation of the ongoing developments leading to elections of new leaders within the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), the two warring groups have expressed their support for the recently harmonized election guidelines and the establishment of a 93-member electorate.
Our reporter gathered that the leaders of both factions; Kayode Fartinto and Emenike Nwokeoji, have recognized the significance of the new guidelines in moving towards a more unified and peaceful future for the association.
The revelations come amid tensions which have persisted in the association due to differences over election methods and concerns regarding the implementation of the ‘peace accord, brokered recently by the Customs Consultative Council.
Members of the two factions who spoke to our correspondent affirmed that the recent decision to adopt a 93-member electorate for the elections marks a significant step forward in the association. This is even as they added that the decision was tailored to align with the ANLCA Constitution of 2013.
In a chat with our correspondent Ayo Sulaiman, a prominent figure vying for the position of National Publicity Secretary and a member of the Segun Olduntan and Emenike Nwokeoji faction, openly voiced his support for the resolution.
He stated that, “We don’t have any issue with that, if that will bring a lasting solution to the protracted crisis in ANLCA, but it must be done under equity, fairness, and justice.” He emphasized the need for transparent procedures and adherence to the constitution to ensure the legitimacy and credibility of the elections.
Similarly, Mr Joe Sanni, another member of the Emenike Nwokeoji and Segun Oduntan faction, highlighted that the decision aligns with the constitution, focusing on qualified individuals such as chapter executives and members of the Board of Trustees. He acknowledged the concerns around the validity of licenses and emphasized the role of the screening committee in making informed decisions about voter eligibility.
“Whether we are satisfied or not, it is still a way forward, you can’t always have it all to your advantage and importantly that decision was tailored along the constitution even though, the constitution has specified as chapter executives, NECOM but there is no NECOM now; then the board that’s all, those are the people that are qualified under our constitution.”
Similarly, Onome Monije, who belongs to the Kayode Farinto faction, expressed the desire for peace in ANLCA. She mentioned that despite differences in certain chapters, the overall goal is unity.
She said, “All we want is that we want peace in ANLCA, if that is the best way for there to be peace, we will go with it.” Monije acknowledged that even though there are challenges to address, the collective goal of a peaceful and cohesion ANLCA is paramount.
Also, Mr Dennis Okwu, who is running as the Vice President of the association alongside Dr. Kayode Farinto, also expressed support for the decision-making process and said he stands in support of the resolution.
Speaking also, Mr Bola Dada who claimed to be a neutral member of the association said the resolution’s acceptance by both factions is indicative of a broader understanding that unity and stability are essential for ANLCA’s progress.
While acknowledging the challenges and concerns, he said the collective agreement on this approach signals a shared commitment to resolving differences and working toward a common goal.
He said with the election process meticulously outlined, including provisions for thorough verification and input from concerned parties, the steps toward a successful and legitimate electoral outcome are well-established.
