The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) on Tuesday honoured the Head of its Complaints Unit, Dr. Bashir Alhassan Ambi-Mohammed, as he retired from service after 26 years of distinguished service to the Council and the maritime industry.
The retirement ceremony, which also coincided with his birthday celebration, was held at the Council’s headquarters in Lagos and drew management staff, colleagues, family members, friends, and industry stakeholders who gathered to celebrate a career defined by integrity, professionalism, leadership, and commitment to service.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Occasion and Director of Strategic Planning and Research at the NSC, Mr. Rotimi Anifowose, described Dr. Ambi-Mohammed as one of the Council’s finest officers whose contributions had left an indelible mark on the organisation.
According to Anifowose, he was a member of the interview panel that recruited Ambi-Mohammed into the Council over two decades ago and remains proud of the decision.
“I can proudly say that the interview panel made at least one very good decision. We got that one absolutely right,” he said.
Recalling the retiree’s journey from a young officer to becoming Head of the Complaints Unit, Anifowose noted that Ambi-Mohammed consistently demonstrated humility, professionalism, fairness, and patience in handling stakeholder complaints and resolving disputes.
“It is perhaps fitting that a man who spent years resolving other people’s complaints is retiring without leaving us with any complaints about his service. That in itself is a remarkable achievement,” he remarked.
He added that in an office where frustrated stakeholders often sought redress, Ambi-Mohammed remained calm and dependable, earning widespread respect from both colleagues and industry players.
“Not everyone can turn complaints into compliments, but he came remarkably close to doing that,” Anifowose stated.
Describing the celebrant as both a colleague and a brother, Anifowose shared personal experiences that reflected Ambi-Mohammed’s respect for relationships, family values, and sound counsel, noting that he had always demonstrated a willingness to put education, integrity, and long-term development ahead of immediate pressures.
Dr. Ambi-Mohammed joined the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in 2000 as a Public Relations Officer after beginning his professional career with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC).
During his years at the Council, he held several strategic positions, including serving as Personal Assistant to former NSC Governing Board Chairmen and the late Capt. Adamu A. Biu, a former Executive Secretary of the Council. He later served in the Consumer Affairs Department before rising through the ranks to become Head of the Complaints Unit.
A highly accomplished academic and professional, Ambi-Mohammed holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication from the University of Maiduguri, Master’s Degrees in Mass Communication and International Transport, as well as M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Mass Communication.
He is also a Certified Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Practitioner and a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
Beyond his official duties, he played significant leadership roles within and outside the Council. He served as General Secretary and later President of the NSC Staff Cooperative Society, where he oversaw substantial growth in the cooperative’s financial base. He also served twice as Chairman of the Lagos State Branch of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria and currently served as General Secretary of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.
Throughout his career, Ambi-Mohammed received several honours, including the NSC ACTU/ICPC Integrity Award, NSC CEO Award, CILT Nigeria President’s Awards, and the prestigious CILT International President’s Award in 2024.
Colleagues who paid tribute described him as a mentor, administrator, scholar, and consummate professional whose commitment to excellence helped strengthen the Council’s dispute resolution mechanism and enhance stakeholder confidence in the organisation.
Many speakers noted that his retirement marked the end of a remarkable chapter in the Council’s history, particularly in the area of complaints management, while expressing confidence that his legacy of integrity, accountability, and service would continue to inspire future generations of officers.
The event featured goodwill messages, presentations, prayers, and birthday celebrations in honour of the retiring officer, whose 26-year career was widely celebrated as a testament to dedication, loyalty, and exemplary public service.
