The Brigade Commander, 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Sokoto, Brig. Gen Time Dibi, last weekend, charged officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service to be more vigilant to check smuggling of arms into the country through the borders.
Gen Dibi gave the advice while decorating five newly promoted officers of the service in Sokoto area command.
He said the advice became necessary because of threat of insurgents and dissidents that were now real and therefore there was the need to work together to prevent proliferation of dangerous weapons in the country.

He said officers and men of the service posted  to the borders should ensure that all persons, vehicles and animals crossing the borders were properly searched and those that needed to pay custom duties were made to do so.
He said the call became necessary in view of how the borders which were along the Sahara desert were porus.
Speaking earlier, Alhaji Usman Kankara,  Area Comptroller  for Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states, charged the newly  promoted officers to exhibit high sense of moral conduct in the discharge of their responsibilities.
He said the service expected high performance from the officers while discharging their constitutional responsibility.
He said it was encouraging that there was a significant increase in the revenue generated by the command between this year and the previous year.
Kankara called on officers and men serving under the command to further justify the welfare and promotion being ensured during the administration of the  Comptroller General Alhaji Abdullahi Inde by re-dedicatig themselves to service.
He said the comptroller general believed that if properly promoted, officers and men would perform well by giving their best to the service.
Kankara charged them to strive hard to curtail smuggling as the development was preventing the country's industries from growing thereby causing unemployment among the teeming youths.
