The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has announced that the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) has paid five months worth of salary arrears to its staff, out of a total of seven months owed.
This development comes after intervention from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Hon. Adegboyega Oyetola, whose efforts have been commended by the union.
In a statement signed by the President-General of MWUN, Com.Adeyanju Adewale, the Union expressed gratitude to the Minister for his swift action, which has eased the challenges faced by CRFFN staff.
The statement emphasized the importance of the Minister’s role, highlighting that his dedication to workers’ welfare in the maritime sector has made a substantial impact during this critical period.
The MWUN praised Oyetola for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of workers within the sector, describing his intervention as timely and effective.
The Union noted that the Minister’s involvement helped facilitate the resolution of the long-standing salary issues that had affected the morale and productivity of CRFFN staff.
“The Minister’s humane leadership and dedication have made a significant difference, demonstrating a strong commitment to addressing challenges faced by maritime workers,” the statement read.
While acknowledging the payment of five months’ salary arrears, the MWUN has called on the CRFFN management to settle the remaining two months’ outstanding salaries without further delay.
The Union emphasized the importance of completing the payments to ensure stability and continued morale among the staff.
The statement further appealed for the continued support of Hon. Adegboyega Oyetola in ensuring that the CRFFN fulfills its obligations to the affected workers.
MWUN stressed that the prompt settlement of the remaining arrears would solidify the progress made so far and restore full confidence among the employees of the Council.
The Union also expressed appreciation to the Acting Registrar of the CRFFN for working collaboratively with MWUN during the resolution process, which led to the payment of the five months’ arrears.
This cooperation is seen as a positive step towards a more harmonious relationship between the CRFFN management and the Union, aimed at addressing worker-related issues more effectively in the future.
