President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR.
The extension, announced in a statement issued on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, comes ahead of the original expiration date of August 31, 2025.
According to the Presidency, the additional year will allow Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete key initiatives under the current administration. These include the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and the execution of Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
“President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” the statement read.
The President expressed confidence that the extension will strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Customs Service to fulfill its core mandates, including trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.
Adeniyi, who was appointed Comptroller-General in 2023, has led several reform efforts within the Service aimed at enhancing transparency, efficiency, and compliance in customs operations.
