Corruption: NIMASA Staff Demand Bribe to Process Official Documents

The management of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has expressed dismay at the fact that  some staff of departments and units of the agency demand financial gratification from the agency's contractors before processing their documents.
In an internal memo signed by Director of Administration and Human Resources of NIMASA, Mr Akin Akinyosoye, a copy of which was obtained exclusively by Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week, the agency frowned at the act, describing it as unacceptable of officers of the agency.
In the memo titled; Attitude to Work, was dated 20th of July 2017 with reference number; NIMASA /APD/1.2 and addressed to all staff of the agency, NIMASA vowed that any staff caught demanding gratification would face disciplinary actions.
Akinyosoye noted that collection of bribe by the NIMASS staff contravenes Chapter 3 Section 4 of the Public Service Rules and Section 4.4.2 of NIMASA's condition of service and section 5 of the agency's anti-corruption policy.
The memo states "Management has received with dismay, complaints from the agency's contractors that staff of some departments and units of the agency demand for financial gratification to enable processing of contract documents"
He said that the action in itself is "thereby prolonging turnaround time and overall deliverables and ultimately impact on the image of the agency contrary to the spirit of the recent rebranding"
"Management views this as an Act unacceptable of officers of the agency, which contravenes chapter 3 section 4 of the public  service rules and section 4.4.2 of the agency's conditions of service and section 5 (i-vi) of the agency'sagency's anti corruption policy"
"Consequent upon the above, staff of the agency are hereby warned to desist from such act as any staff culpable would face appropriate disciplinary actions in line with extant rules"
