Apparently determined to streamline duty payable on both used and new vehicles imported into the country through the Tin Can island Ports in Lagos, indications have emerged that management of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) may soon establish a new command which will be designed to handle Roll on Roll off activities. It is expected to be called RoRo Command.
Source disclosed that, the new command will be carved out of Tin Can Island command and Port and Terminal Multipurposes Limited (PTML).
Currently, the service has two commands where duty on imported vehicle are collected; namely Five Star Logistics and PTML.
The proposed new RoRo command will take care of vehicle imports from PTML command and Tin Can Island Ports command comprising of Five Star Logistics, Ports & Cargo and Tin Can Island Container Terminal (TICT).
The new command, according to customs sources is to collect duty mainly from all imported vehicles through these terminals. The source added that it is still unclear whether containerised vehicles, will be assigned to the new command or other commands as it used to.
It was not also clear where the RoRo command headquarters will be situated among the four terminals that make up the Tin Island port complex or the PTML Command.
But presently, all the terminals at the Tin Can Island port including the PTML command are involved in handling of imported vehicles.
While Ports & Cargo and TICT handle containerised vehicles, Five Star Logistics and PTML are involved in both RoRo and containerised vehicle importation.
Originally, Five Star Logistics terminal and PTML are designated terminals for RoRo activities.
