The Apapa Area 1 command of the Nigeria Customs Service said that it collected about N139.151 billion between January and June 2012, raising hope that the unprecedented N1Trillon overall revenue target that was set by the service for itself in 2012 is achievable.
According to the command’s public relations officer, Assistant Controller Timi Bomodi, even though it was not able to meet its N81Billion target for the first quarter of 2012,records of revenue collection after then have been encouraging.

According to the command’s public relations officer, Assistant Controller Timi Bomodi, even though it was not able to meet its N81Billion target for the first quarter of 2012,records of revenue collection after then have been encouraging.
“Apapa Area 1 Command, being the flag ship, and poster boy of the Service was saddled with the responsibility of collecting a third of its expected revenue. This translates to an expected monthly collection of 27 billion. Given its history, and the fact that the highest revenue ever generated in the Command in a single month is 25 billion in September 2011 it appeared even more unachievable to the undiscerning observer”, he stated in a statement that was made available to our correspondent last week.
“However, the position of the Command as articulated by the Area Comptroller, Adamu Yusuf Garko has been one of resolute optimism backed up with diligent and conscientious service. The Area Controller who although admitted the challenge as difficult reassured Management that it was achievable, despite the dismal”.
Giving an insight into the revenue collection profile of the command, the spokesperson disclosed that “the monthly target set for the Command is 27 billion and its performance in the second quarter was able to match this expectation. In April the Command collected, N19.7 billion, in May N24.6 billion and in June the Command set a new record for the highest revenue ever collected by a Command in a single month, by collecting N36.7 billion. The total revenue collected for this quarter is N81.28 billion, and the average revenue collected is N27 billion, giving hope that the target set is still achievable”.
“Indeed a comparative analysis of the performance of the Command between the first half of the year 2012 and 2011 shows an improvement of N34.46 billion or 33% over and above the performance of 2011”.
He also added that, in the area of anti smuggling operations, the command made seizures of 18 units of containers made up of nine 20-foot and nine 40-foot containers respectively.
The seized containers had assorted items such as: batteries, used engines, deodorants, car parts, electronics, furniture, used cars, pirated books, and table wine, all with a duty paid value of N147, 641,067.
In the area of export, the public relations officer disclosed that about 452,355 metric tons of assorted items and commodities were exported through the Command. According to him, they included; cocoa beans, cashew nut, sesame seeds, ginger, hibiscus flower, gum Arabic, processed rubber, various processed shrimps, palm kernel cake, lead ingot , processed leather, cases of Dettol, and Maggi crayfish, cartons of biscuits, bags of assorted bathroom slippers, and more than 1 million litres of Ethyl alcohol, all with a total market value of =N=83.122 billion were shipped out of the country through the command.
