The company last week in Lagos carried out the third leg of its training program which it organized for practitioners in the maritime industry, especially licensed customs agents.

The company last week in Lagos carried out the third leg of its training program which it organized for practitioners in the maritime industry, especially licensed customs agents.
Chief Executive Officer of the outfit, Mr. Lucky Eyis Amiwero who spoke with Shipping Position Daily correspondent after the training exercise gave the rationale behind the training, he said that the customs has failed to carry agents along and explain to them the workability of the new tools that are being introduced in the sector.
“The Nigeria Customs Service are suppose to train agents, as licensed customs agents which are under the ministry of finance we are supposed to be trained, because every new tool that is introduced in the port by virtue of the Intact Trust Fund says that anytime you introduce something new in the country, there must be training capacity embodied in it, and any contract suppose to have training component for stakeholders but that aspect have not been addressed’’
‘’The jobs we do is frustrating some of the Nigeria agents because they do not understand it, so we are using the facility on ground to grow them so that they can understand and know the business’’ he explained.
Amiwero also explained that in order to close up the knowledge gap, Eyis Resources Limited had organized a twenty two weeks training for clearing agents, irrespective of their associations, he maintained that it is a free for all program as the company really wants the Nigerian port system and operation to improve.
The program has also been designed to come up in batches, and all is expected to be rounded up in twenty two weeks.
Some of the courses treated at 3rd batch which held last week includes; Common External Tariff [CET] Customs duties of goods imported into or exported from Nigeria, the classification of goods imported, charge OD import duty, partial exemption of fish from import duty, concession for utilization of Nigeria.
Others include; goods prohibited from being imported, importation of arms and ammunitions, how to identify contraband and non contraband goods.
Eyis Resources in the second batch of the training had drilled freight forwarders on valuation and classification of goods.
