A Federal Government delegation comprising of the Policy and Monitoring Sub-Committee (PMC) of the National Council on Privatization (NCP), Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has commended foremost indigenous terminal operator; the Ports and Cargo Handling Company for its giant strides in port development and infrastructures.
The team, led by Mohammed G. Shuaibu visited the terminal last week on assessment of the performance of privatized enterprises.
A Federal Government delegation comprising of the Policy and Monitoring Sub-Committee (PMC) of the National Council on Privatization (NCP), Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has commended foremost indigenous terminal operator; the Ports and Cargo Handling Company for its giant strides in port development and infrastructures.
The team, led by Mohammed G. Shuaibu visited the terminal last week on assessment of the performance of privatized enterprises.
After a physical assessment of Ports and Cargo Handling Company facilities at Tin Can Island Port, the team lauded the efforts of the concessionaire and promised to make recommendations to the appropriate authorities, so as to enhance better performance of the terminal to ensure absolute success of the privatization policy of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
While conveying the delegation as well as senior management staff of the company round its facilities, Managing Director of Ports and Cargo, Mr. John Jenkins revealed that his organization has transformed the terminal that was concessioned to it in 2006, through huge investments in both equipment and human capital with positive impact on the nation’s economy.
The managing director assured that the company is ready to expand the scope of its operations in the maritime Industry so as to generate employment for more Nigerians and continue to impact positively on the economy at large.
Jenkins however highlighted the challenges that are facing the terminal to include, the traffic gridlock around the entrance of the terminal which is usually occasioned by dumping of seized items by the Tin Can Division of the Nigerian Police, as well as lack of adequate power supply.
He appealed to the Federal Government and other relevant government agencies including the Nigerian Ports Authority and Nigerian Police to assist the company by making the access road free and motorable as well as ensure constant electricity supply to the port.
He equally said that refurbishment of quay aprons and clearing of seized items like containers, trucks and others from the entrance of the terminal are necessary to ensure easy vehicular movement in and out of the Terminal.
Also speaking, the Tin-can Island Port Manager of the NPA; E.B Longe assured that all the challenges raised by the Ports and Cargo boss would be effectively tackled as soon as possible for the common benefit of all stakeholders.
