The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘C’, of Nigeria Customs Service said it has handed over 73.1kg Indian hemp valued at N2.62 million to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The Area Controller, Mr Victor Dimka, told newsmen in Owerri last Friday that the Indian hemp, concealed in nine bags in a luxury bus, was impounded along Enugu-Port Harcourt road.
He said that the suspect, Bola Olakino, was arrested alongside with the substance based on information and vigilance of the officers of the zone.
Dimka explained that the suspect and the substance were handed over to NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution in the spirit of inter-agency cooperation..
The deputy comptroller reiterated the determination of the unit to curb smuggling through intensified intelligence efforts.
“We are sending signals that enough is enough because gone are the days when people smuggle with impunity and think they will not be caught.
“Today, you will find out that they have abandoned the smuggling of rice, second hand clothing, shoes and now go into cannabis or Indian hemp.’’
In his response, NDLEA representative, Mr Abdul Momudu, said the exercise was the first major inter-departmental cooperation between the NDLEA and Customs.
“We are going to do a diligent investigation and prosecution of this case. As a matter of fact, this is the highest quantity we have received from sister agency in this area in recent time,’’ he said.
