Idled Boxship Fleet Shrinks, But Is This The Lull Before The Storm?

The number of inactive containerships has fallen this week to 274, or 393,586 teu, down from 289 ships equating to 423,355 teu the previous week, according to Lloyd’s List Intelligence (LLI).
The smaller vessel sizes show the biggest week-on-week reduction in laid-up tonnage, with 12 boxships between 500 teu-4,999 teu reactivated ahead of the perceived peak season demand.
A notable addition to the idled post-panamax sector is the 2007-built, K Line operated, 8,212 teu Humen Bridge shown as inactive at anchor off Majishan, China.

With the exception of the 15,500 teu Emma Maersk, which is expected to be returned to Maersk Line in the next few weeks after undergoing repairs in Salerno, the largest containership currently idled is the 12,400 teu MSC Katie, which is recorded by LLI as having been inactive off Ningbo, China, since April 24.
Meanwhile, with the peak season predicted to disappoint again this year and ocean carriers struggling to return to profitability, it is expected that many more boxships will be mothballed during the course of the second half of the year.
