IMO Council Elections: Minister Constitutes Nigeria’s Lobby Committee

Barring any last-minute change, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy; Adegboyega Oyetola, is expected to inaugurate a ministerial committee in Abuja, to begin campaign for actualise Nigeria’s ambition for a seat in the Category ‘C’ of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

 

Sources hinted our correspondent that the committee which will have chief executives of agencies under the ministry, as members will be headed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry; Mr Oloruntola Olufemi.

 

Other members of the committee include: Mr Babatunde Bombata, the Director of Maritime Safety and Security in the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, as well CEOs of the agencies, including the Maritime Academy of Nigeria.

 

The IMO Council, which is graded into categories ‘A, B and C’ is the executive arm of the IMO and it is responsible for supervising the work of the organization.

 

Recall that Nigeria last won a seat in the Council in 2009 when Dr Ade Dosunmu was the Director General of NIMASA. Since then, all efforts to rejoin the group have failed
