Indian Authorities Detain Japanese Container Ship

A Japanese container ship which allegedly rammed into an Indian fishing trawler on Wednesday night has been detained by local authorities.
Reports said the MV Izumo, reportedly owned by NYK Line, was on its way to Singapore from Kandla Port when the incident took place approximately 18 nautical miles off the Kerala coast. Kandla is a major cargo hub on India’s west coast.
“The merchant vessel did not stop after the collision and continued its journey. Within five hours, it was intercepted off Cochin by the Coast Guard,” officials said.

The Coast Guard, which used a Dornier aircraft and two patrol frigates to track the cargo ship, said the fishing boat capsized and sank immediately after the collision. “Three fishermen suffered minor injuries but they were rescued by another boat,” officials said.
Indian officials said the Japanese vessel is now anchored near Cochin Port for further investigations.
The incident follows the arrest and jailing of two Italian ship guards aboard the oil tanker Enrica Lexie, who are accused of killing two fishermen in February last year, also off the Kerala coast.
